Explore Australia's mountain biking destinations from the utopia that is Melrose in South Australia to the Alpine wonderland of Mt Buller in Victoria.
It's not all about the bike though as we review what there is to do both on and off the bike. I mean you can't ride all weekend, can you?

Dinner Plain & Mount Hotham

With State Forest on one side and National Park on the other the alpine village of Dinner Plain is sitting pretty in the middle. Dinner Plain, or DP as it’s known to the locals, is a small alpine village of approximately 300 houses located in the Victorian alps.
At just 10km’s further along the Great Alpine Road from Mt Hotham DP has some great trails, a few cafes and an all important pub complete with it’s own beer garden dirt jump track.
Beechworth, VIC

Bikes, bakery and brewery. The Beechworth Mountain Bike park , located a 10 minute ride from town is a web of purpose built trails from cross country, a jumps course, short course downhill and a skills area.
Tear yourself away from trails though and Beechworth has all your post ride needs sorted with a cracking assortment of pies and cakes at the Bakery and cold brews at the brewery.
Adelaide by Bike

After a couple of days hanging out in Adelaide I’ve found some great little rides.
Got to take in the coast and Greenhill Road on Saturday morning for a few hours then took to the hills proper this morning for four hours. Great stuff!
Some long climbs followed by some pinch climbs followed by more long climbs… Awesome.
Bright, Victoria

Bright is located at the foothills of the Victorian Alps and is flanked by Pine tree covered mountains.
A pure mountain biking gold mine.
It's not all about off road though so pack the road bike as well and hit up the four road climbs of Mt Buffalo, Tawonga Gap, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham to choose from with the climbs ranging from the 7km Tawonga Gap to the almost 30km Mt Hotham ascent.
Destination - Melrose, SA

Sheep. Gotta love them right? I mean they are damn tasty but they also carve a mean off camber singletrack as well.
Melrose in South Australia must have the pick of the lamb chops as the little four legged trail munching machines have been busy carving a whole network of trails.
What this makes for is a riding experience far removed from the usual pine and natural forest trails most of us seem to regularly ride, and how refreshing that is!
