Coondoo Road is easy. Not easy in the sense that it’s predictable and safe but more that you know what you’re in for and you’re not leaving until you get it; sweet and fast singletrack.

The Chocolate Foot all singing and dancing bandwagon rolled into the popular Nowra trails last Sunday for Round 2 (well technically round 1 after it was postponed until November...) of the Singletrack Mind Series.
It’s a pretty simple series concept really, put together some of NSW’s and ACT’s most popular singletrack riding locations from Awaba, Mt Stromlo, Wingello, Mt Annan, Lithgow and Nowra and the masses will come.
Come they did alright as the Coondoo Road trails in Nowra were in mint condition with a dry hard pack surface and flowing corners it was a sure thing that the riders would be leaving all singletracked up by day’s end.
With a surprise shorter loop (well a surprise for me as I didn’t ride a practice lap!) the chosen event course was compact and neat with no padding just to make up the distance. It was straight to the Coondoo Road top shelf with singletrack sections linked in with just a dash of fire road to catch a break.
With super minimal climbing (around 100m vertical per lap) it was easy to get your flow on and keep the momentum going.
With perfect weather for racing and such a fine course the big guns were smiling and scorching around the course. For the rest of us well the enjoyment was certainly there, if perhaps at just a slightly slower pace.
Riding solo in an event like this I was in two minds. On one hand there were fine trails to be had but on the other I just wanted to hang out track side and enjoy the fine sunshine and the laid back event vibe. In the end it was an even battle for me with a handful of laps in the bag and several minutes rest in between laps to recharge before setting off again.
Next up in the Singletrack Mind Series is the Mt Stromlo round on the 26th June for a 7 hour race. One things certain about Mt Stromlo, the singletrack is a given, but I wouldn’t quite call it easy, you’ll be pleasantly working for your fix at this one!
