The Enduro Path Less Travelled

It could have gone either way really. For the first time in years my day job schedule was cleared and a long 3 week Christmas break was looming.
With no travelling on the cards I imagined back to back to back 6 hour days in the saddle, eating copious amounts of snacks and washing it all down with plenty of carb replacing beverages. Well, in the wash up 2 out or 3 isn’t so bad except perhaps for my fitness not the two I chose!
Wet Out? It's Time For A Soul Roll

Is this thing on? Despite my loudest protests nothing is working. Yep, I'm sick of the wet trails, wet roads and I'm now even starting to sneer at glasses of water. But that's nothing new, I bet every one is.
I'm sure someone out there is loving the wet Summer that Sydney has had this year but I'm sure as hell that someone isn't a bike rider.
Future Enduro – Where’s It All Headed?

If you could dream up your ideal endurance mountain bike event what would it be? A weekend stage race through the Alps? A point to point marathon race in a team of 4? or just a good old 24 hour on a pumping track?
Comparing this year to the past one or two and on the surface there may be signs that riders are looking for the next big thing. Events that sold out in warp speed in the past are now taking just that bit longer to fill up, or not at all, and new events are sprouting up from all sides but some fail to launch to full capacity.
Has the Ministry of Marathon or the Epiphany of Enduro has lost some of its gloss?
I know that there’ll be plenty of event promoters trying to tweak their events or come up with the next big thing. I mean who wouldn’t want a well regarded event with a super vibe that keeps the punters flowing back year after year?
Personally, I’ve been ‘racing’ for the last 4-5 years and sometimes you just go through the motions and roll along from one uninspiring event to the next. This is probably equally a reflection on me and the events though as I’m sure that if I was more at the pointy end I’d be going into each event more focused...
Looking at the Event Calendar though and one event has recently caught my eye that seems to combine all the goodness of endurance mountain biking and rolled it into one sweet package.
Now I’m not here to push their cart per se but I like what their selling and hope that some Aussie promoters stand up and take note.
So what’s this event? The Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge in Malaysia. This 5 day stage race covers a lot of disciplines from a 62km Marathon Stage, Cross Country Olympic Stage, 7 Hour Enduro Stage, Cross Country Point to Point Stage, and a Short Track Cross Country Stage.
How good does this sound! You’ll have to be a master at all trades to conquer this one and having a few sacrificial team mates probably wouldn’t hurt either. The best thing about this event in my opinion though is the variety of stages. I’ll bet that each day keeps inspiring the riders to ride the next.
So keep on selling event promoters, I’ll keep coming, but if you start selling the future of enduro like this I’ll buy plenty.
