On Saturday 18 February 2012, the second Short Circuit Cancer Mountain Bike event will take place in Sydney’s Royal National Park. For six-hours teams will take on a short circuit from Heathcote, in relay style, to raise funds in the fight against cancer.
Sadly in Australia, there is someone diagnosed with one of the many forms of cancer every five minutes. That’s 288 people that will be diagnosed today. Chances are you already know someone in your close circle that has been touched by this disease.

Short Circuit Cancer was founded by Brent Collier of Peak Health in Gymea Bay. Based on the NSW Cancer Council’s Rely For Life concept; Short-Circuit Cancer will see the Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas mountain biking communities, along with family, friends, corporate and other social teams take to the trails of the Royal National Park for six-hours of tag team riding to raise funds.
The inaugural event in 2011 raised in excess of $30,000. This year’s target is $50,000.
‘The initial idea came after about 42km of running around the Sylvania Waters Athletic track,’ says Brent. ‘I’m not really a runner, so at about the marathon mark, I was thinking to myself how much fun I would be having if I was riding my mountain bike out in the Nasho.’
‘I spoke to a few friends who ride and who also thought it was a great idea. It all came together from there, and the results were amazing. I think year two however is even more nerve-wracking. We have much higher expectations,’ he adds.
How can people get involved?
Individuals and teams are invited to take part in the relay, which will be run around a 10km bush loop from Heathcote.
The event hub will also include a bike check-up and maintenance station, kid’s mountain bike skills sessions, an all-day BBQ by Eleoura Surf Club and hydration station supplied by the local, but world renown, GU.
There are also some great prizes up for grabs, including a Trek Mountain Bike valued at over $3000 donated by Fraser’s Bike Store at Taren Point.
